Our Story

On September 5, 1999 Tropical Storm Dennis came on shore for a 2nd time with torrential rain. Ten short days later Hurricane Floyd hit with devastating wind and more rain. Much of eastern North Carolina was flooded. For one week New Bern sat as an island due to all major roadways being under water. Many people lost their lives and their homes.

Jack Bender had just recently retired  and was working 5 days a week heading up Carpenters for Christ. When the water receded, Carpenters for Christ sprang into action doing “mud outs” (removing river sediment from inside homes). Over a two year period they helped restore 24 homes, all with volunteer help.

Over the two year period Jack bought a tool trailer, hundreds of tools, and a “Big Red Truck” to tow with. When the work started to slow Jack realized retirement was not for him and began considering what to do next. As his father pointed out- he now owned the tools, the trailer, the truck, and had the knowledge and talent to reconstruct. The next logical step was to go into business for himself as a general handy man.

In May of 2001 Jack Bender Construction was created. The next two years the business grew to several employees and two crews. As the job sizes grew so did the need for a North Carolina General Contractors License. In November of 2003, Jack passed the test to receive his license.

In the summer of 2007, the job requests grew to needing an unlimited contractor’s license. After accomplishing the unlimited contractor’s license, a steel company contacted us and shared their desire for us to become their authorized builder for our area. We are now proud to offer Rigid steel buildings to our customers. We are always looking for ways to better suit our customers and grow. We currently work in five counties with multiple employees. Our jobs range from rot repair and simple door replacements up to new custom homes. Our commercial division offers church, school industrial and retail services.

In August of 2016 the decision was made to change the corporation name to Bender Remodeling, Inc.  We feel this decision better reflects and helps us advertise what we do best.

As we continue to grow we will never forget our roots. We were born out of a mission field and strive to do God’s Work, God’s Way!
