As a home remodeler in the New Bern area – we’re used to working in existing homes, but this new home build actually began as a Motel. From motel to cleared land to a new home – check out how it went down!
Back in March of 2022 we started tearing down the old Trent Motel in Pollocksville, NC. The Trent Motel had seen better days and had not been restored after flooding from Hurricane Florence in 2018, so even though the Motel was such a great memory for so many in its heyday, it had to go.
Dirtworks took care of taking down the building piece by piece for us and getting the site cleaned up and ready for a new build. We actually had 2 new builds – but that’ll be a post for another day.
This home features vinyl siding, paintable shutters painted in Farrow & Ball Pigeon and brass hardware. We love the way it turned out. Stay tuned for photos of the inside!

We loved working with the homeowners on this project! An incredibly unique and beautiful home we had the honor of building here in eastern North Carolina.
What’s in this year for 2024? I can tell you one thing – it’s not grays and sleek designs. Check out this list of home trends for 2024.
Woodgrain Millwork
We’re kicking it back to the early days where woodworking, and intricate wood designs are making a comeback. And honestly, why did it ever go away?
2. Brass Accents
I have to admit. For years I was against all things gold. Why would anyone ever want that? What goes around, comes around, because now I’m in love! My personal favorite? Unlacquered Brass.
3. Vintage Furniture
This one plays off of the woodgrain millwork. Many are wanting that wholesome feel from long ago. And let’s face it – vintage furniture was made better.
4. Statement Tiles
Using a statement tile in a shower is a great way to add character and help break up the monotony up a plain white shower. I’m loving bold, rich hues.
5. Mixed Metals
When I was remodeling my kitchen back in 2019, I was in love with so many metals. Black? Yes. Copper? Yes. Brass? Yes. And I wanted them all – so I did. And it looks fantastic and not builder-grade feel with everything matchy-matchy.
6. Intimate Dining Areas
I saw this as a trend and thought – why was this not a thing? Yes to the intimate family dinners. Yes to having friends over for dinner. Just, yes.
7. Wallpaper
I know a lot of you are probably cringing right now. Wallpaper? Really? But hear me out. Wallpaper has come a looooooong way. Patterned wallpaper is a great way to add visual interest to a space – whether it’s a room, wall, or inside a bookcase. And, since it is a trend, use a removable kind – so when you’re over it, easy peasy to remove.
8. Exposed Staircases
Exposing staircases is a great way to open up an area and make it feel bigger. Plus open staircases give you another way to add character and customize your home. Newel posts, spindles and banisters host so many options to make it YOU.
9. Bold Hues
Neutral had its time to shine. While it’s nice and needed in some areas, some areas just need a dose of color with bolder hues. Paint is a great inexpensive way to make a statement.
10. Cozy Spaces
Personally, I don’t love sleek, modern minimalism. There’s a time and a place, but my home isn’t one of them. Give me a cozy room, fireplace roaring, and loved ones beside me – that’s the good stuff.

If there’s one thing you’ve noticed about construction lately, it’s that prices have skyrocketed. No, your contractor isn’t trying to price gouge you – the prices of materials have gone up THAT much. Not only has their been an increase in cost, but you just can’t get materials in a timely manner any longer either. Check out this article – and remember to be patient with your contractor and home project; we’re just as frustrated with it as you are.
With the lumber prices and the cost of other building materials on the rise, the cost of construction is constantly increasing. What does this mean for you and appraisals? Take a look at this insightful article from the National Association of Home Builders to learn more!
Hurricane Florence did her best; this home’s first floor was completely destroyed and we remodeled it essentially from scratch; we’re thrilled with the results and glad Florence didn’t have the last word. Check out the slideshow in our Portfolio or check a couple of the shots out here:
Chester finally got a chance to visit home for a morning. It’s safe to say, he loved it! • Closets, bookshelves and pantry shelving were worked on today. Paint is coming soon. I should probably figure the colors out. 🤔 Jake and I are usually obnoxiously agreeable about everything design wise; but colors will be the death of us. <kidding kidding> As long as he lets me pick, we’ll be fine. 😆
We picked out our countertops this morning and made a stop at the house to check out the progress. The kitchen cabinets are in, and the fireplace is bricked! I have to say, we have the best guys working on our home. ❤️
